The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has established a $100,000 Greater Together Community Fund for the Town of Farmington.

The purpose of the Greater Together Community Funds is to:

  • support the community in taking ownership around the needs in their towns
  • encourage broad and inclusive civic engagement and
  • anchor the Hartford Foundation in each town.

Announcement of 2023 Grant Funding

In November 2023, the Farmington Greater Together Community Fund Advisory Committee announced the recipients of its third annual grants. The amount of funding awarded totaled over $35,000, to nine organizations that do work to benefit the residents of Farmington.

The 2023 grants were awarded to:

  1. Interval House: $5,000 to support Farmington victims of domestic violence. Click HERE for more info.
  2. Services for the Elderly of Farmington: $4,250 to purchase wheelchairs and walkers for the Farmington community to borrow. Click HERE for more info.
  3. Greystone Foundation: $5,000 to provide short-term financial assistance to individuals and families who have unexpected events disruptive to household finances.Click HERE for more info.
  4. Covenant to Care for Children: $3,000 to provide basic and essential goods for Farmington children who are abused, neglected, impoverished, or otherwise at risk. Click HERE for more info.
  5. Farmington Food Pantry: $2,500 to purchase fresh food from a local farm for distribution at the food pantry. Click HERE for more info.
  6. Stanley-Whitman House: $7,000 to fund the Charlotte Henry Initiative, aiming to explore and highlight the life of Charlotte Henry, a mixed-race Native/African American woman and make the Stanley-Whitman House a vital center for the study of the Tunxis community. Click HERE for more info.

The Farmington Greater Together Community Fund has made grants to the following organizations:

2022 Grants Awarded 

In December 2022, the Farmington Greater Together Community Fund Advisory Committee announced the recipients of its second annual grants. The amount of funding awarded totaled over $31,000, to ten organizations that do work to benefit the residents of Farmington.

  1. Interval House - $5,000 – to support Farmington victims of domestic violence.
  2. Reach Out and Read - $3,500 – to provide literacy materials and training for Farmington pediatricians.
  3. Operation Fuel - $3,500 to provide energy assistance to Farmington families.​​​​​​
  4. Farmington Land Trust - $5,000 – to purchase tools and resources to augment the development of programming for exposure to the outdoors and environmental education.
  5. The Family Center (DBA) Imagine Nation, A Museum Early Learning Center (in partnership with the Farmington Public Library) - $2,786 – to underwrite STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) outreach lab workshops at the Farmington Public Library for children ages 2-8. 
  6. Farmington Food Pantry - $2,500 to purchase fresh food from a local farm for distribution at the food pantry.
  7. Greystone Foundation - $2,500 – to provide short-term financial assistance to individuals and families who have unexpected events disruptive to household finances.
  8. Invent the Summer - $1,860 -  to purchase video equipment to support kid-run STEM summer challenges.​​​​​​​
  9. Special Olympics Connecticut - $1,000 – to support budget-relieving aspects of Special Olympics Farmington Valley local program​​​​​​​.
  10. Farmington Rotary Club Foundation - $3,625 – to offset the cost for educational programming about bees in Farmington Public Schools.
2021 Grants Awarded 

In October, 2021, the Farmington Greater Together Community Fund made inaugural grants, totaling over $24,000, to seven community organizations to benefit the residents of Farmington.

  1. Connecticut Humane Society - $3,136 to support Fox Memorial Clinic, which provides low-fee veterinary services to Farmington residents who cannot afford veterinary care for their pets.
  2. Farmington Food Pantry -  $5,000 to purchase fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables for pantry clients for 6 months starting in October 2021.
  3. Farmington Libraries - $1,250 to purchase items for "Library On the Go," an outreach program that will visit the Farmington community where people gather, at events, local schools, the Senior Center and assisted living facilities.
  4. Hill-Stead Museum - $2,500 to support the 2nd Annual Juneteenth at Hill-Stead, a day of celebration featuring regional Black artists, organizations and Black-owned businesses.​​​​​​​
  5. Interval House -  $5,000 to support “Victim to Survivor: Transformations at Interval House,” a program that helps Farmington clients with safety planning and counseling, court/legal advocacy, transportation to job interviews and work, finding affordable housing and establishing independence.​​​​​​​
  6. Junior Achievement of Southwest New England -  $2,500 to support financial responsibility and work ready programming for Farmington High School and West Woods Upper Elementary School students. ​​​​​​​
  7. New Horizons Village - $5,000 to help purchase a new wheelchair accessible vehicle for their medical transportation program called "Sunshine Wheels."​​​​​​​

Call for Advisory Committee Members

The Farmington Greater Together Community Fund is now accepting applications for the Advisory Committee. To be eligible, you must be a resident of Farmington, at least 14 years of age and not a current elected official of Farmington. Previous experience in community organizations or in grant-making is not needed. Individuals who have not previously participated in community organizations are welcome and encouraged to apply.

The role of the Advisory Committee is to design and lead an inclusive process to identify the needs in Farmington and design a grantmaking process aimed to ensure that the Greater Together Community Funds can have the greatest impact for the benefit of town residents.
