Catalyst Background Catalyst began in 1993, when a small group of volunteers who wanted to make a difference in Greater Hartford joined forces. Each member donated $500 to create the permanent Catalyst Endowment, which was matched (that first year and for several succeeding years) by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Every year since, Catalyst members have chosen a different topic to study, including literacy, children's healthcare, race relations, Hartford's neighborhoods and schools, and revitalizing the region. At the end of each year, members award grants from the endowment to further that particular cause. Currently, there are more than 180 Catalyst members and the endowment stands at more than $800,000. In 2008, Catalyst members will examine Access to Health Services: Who is missing out and why? The group will examine access beyond insurance… Even if everyone had a way to pay for health services, what barriers exist that challenge people from getting proper care? These might include lack of good information, language differences, cultural challenges, and transportation. The approach will be tailored to get at local issues where Catalyst grants can have an impact. To view the roster of Catalyst members click here.
