Girl Scouts of Connecticut Receives Funding

Thanks to grants of more than $185,000 from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Girl Scouts of Connecticut will be able to serve more girls in the 29-town Greater Hartford area served by the Foundation.

“Girl Scouts of Connecticut is deeply grateful for the support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving,” said Jennifer Smith Turner, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut.  “The Foundation’s generous assistance will increase our ability to deliver Girl Scouting to girls who can greatly benefit from the leadership, self-esteem and life skills embodied in our programs. Girls today face many challenges to their personal and emotional development and Girl Scouting is uniquely suited to help them face these obstacles and work to overcome them.”

The funding will help support outreach programs on a variety of topics, including healthy living, financial literacy, self-esteem and the environment. The programs will run through March 2011 in schools, community centers, youth organizations and other sites in Bloomfield, Canton, East Hartford, Ellington, Enfield, Manchester, Newington, Rocky Hill, Vernon/Rockville, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.

Funds from the Foundation will also help finance camperships to Girl Scout day and resident camps for Hartford and East Hartford girls and a Summer Fun program for Hartford girls who, without financial assistance, would not be able to attend day camp. The Summer Fun program will run for four weeks and will provide Hartford area girls with a mix of academic enrichment and recreation in an environment where respect for others is valued.

“Girl Scouting is distinctive in that it provides age-specific informal curriculum developed by professional academics to help girls discover their strengths, connect with each other and their community, and take action to help make their world a better place,” said Turner. “Thanks to the generous support of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Girl Scouts of Connecticut will be able to provide more girls with opportunities to develop their own talents, learn the importance of community service, and build courage, confidence, and character that will serve them throughout their lives.”
