Piece By Piece, History is Reborn

1870 Glastonbury barn recycled into 21st century museum

A barn with deep roots in Connecticut's agricultural history is getting a new lease on life as a local history museum in Glastonbury, thanks in part to nearly $100,000 in grants from longtime Glastonbury residents who established funds at the Hartford Foundation.

The former Consolidated Cigar Corp. barn, originally on Oak Street, has been reconstructed, piece by piece, by the Historical Society of Glastonbury on the grounds of its historic Welles-Shipman-Ward House in South Glastonbury.

21st century technology to tell Noah Webster's story

You can't find "iPad" in the dictionary yet, but hand-held tablet computers will soon be in use at the 18th century birthplace of Noah Webster, creator of the first American dictionary.

Introduction of iPad-guided tours is one of many strategic plan-based projects funded by a three-year, $225,000 grant by the Hartford Foundation to the Noah Webster House and West Hartford Historical Society. The strategic plan, which seeks to broaden the museum's education outreach and base of support, was developed with an earlier grant from the Hartford Foundation.

Grant aids preservation work on the Metacomet Trail

It is named in honor of the American Indian chief Metacomet, who directed raids against settlers in the Connecticut Valley region of northern Connecticut in the 17th century.

It's the historic Metacomet Trail, a popular 63-mile hiking footpath with spectacular views across seven Greater Hartford communities.
