Help for Struggling Nonprofits

Since 1991, the Hartford Foundation has awarded $10 million in transitional operating support grants to more than 200 agencies in the region to help them survive sudden shortfalls in funding.

Anticipating greater need for this type of assistance this year, the Foundation expanded the program to address the changing needs of nonprofits and the community.  The allowable grant amount was increased, as was the percentage allowed for overhead costs.

The transitional operating support program now:

  • Allows grants of up to $200,000 (increased from $125,000), with most grants not exceeding $150,000, over a 12-month period.
  • Allows 35 percent for overhead costs.
  • Allows agencies to apply for a second year of funding, in certain cases.
  • Gives priority to programs providing critical needs such as food and shelter, and special consideration for programs offering other important services to vulnerable populations as well as organizations that make a major impact on the quality of life and/or economy of the region.
  • Includes access to Nonprofit Support Program resources when appropriate.
