Message from Linda J. Kelly, President
In these tough economic times, success stories give us hope. We at the Hartford Foundation have a unique perspective that affords us a glimpse at these achievements, as we celebrate the accolades our grantees receive.
Take, for example, Hartford Public Library's The American Place, which addresses the needs of immigrants and refugees and was lauded in a recent report by the national Task Force on New Americans. Also, Amy Jaffee Barzach, founder of Boundless Playgrounds, which helps develop accessible playgrounds, received the Martha Stewart "Dreamers Into Doers Award" for her efforts.
We understand that nonprofits are facing extremely difficult times. Shrinking budgets and increased demand for services will stretch many to their limit. Some may cut back on services, others may collaborate or merge in order to continue providing needed services, and some might not survive.
The Foundation is examining ways to help nonprofits face these challenges through our grantmaking and nonprofit support programs. We have already taken steps to expand our transitional operating support program by raising the allowable grant amount, increasing the allowable costs for overhead, and focusing these grants on critical community needs.
Fortunately, donors continue to be generous in their giving. We are heartened by how quickly they respond to opportunities to give, such as the newly-created fund to honor Gloria J. McAdam, president and CEO of Foodshare, and support the work of the organization.
We are pleased to share the stories of generosity, hope and caring that impact the everyday lives of Greater Hartford residents. |
